Our 2020 Vision
This 2020 Vision and Strategy comes to you after a year of thought and reflection, the input of our ministries and teams, and with the full endorsement of our Planning Team and Church Council. It was formally adopted by congregational vote on December 7, 2014.
The visioning process was a faithful discipline of asking, hearing, reflecting and discerning. We found ourselves at times challenged, puzzled and humbled by the depth and complexity of the conversations we have had together. Even more so, we find ourselves inspired by this vision and energized to see it through. We believe that vision gives us guidance so we can all pull in the same direction. A goal gives us criteria by which to measure our success and developing a plan means we no longer simply react to whatever a year brings, but allows us instead to engage in a long-term and considered response to God’s call.
We have claimed this vision together and committed ourselves to living into it over the next four years. We have begun the process of developing an implementation plan that will provide the specific tasks to help us actively work toward growth – not just in numbers, but in all the ways that are important to our congregation.
We believe this process and this vision, while in many ways only a beginning, are a tremendous investment in our future. Thank you to all who helped make it happen and all who will help see it through!

Our 2020 Vision
With faith and courage, we will follow through on God’s call to grow and become a vital and vibrant congregational church for the 21st century.
With clarity and discipline, we will focus our ministry, resources and governance in ways that make room for others to be a part of our life here and that make a greater difference in our growing and diverse community.
With openness and inspiration, we will become a more connected, faithful, creative and engaged congregation, calling out and nurturing the gifts God has given each of us.
Our Core Values
We value our faith. While each of us might express it differently, we are here because we believe in God. We believe we find our salvation in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe we are guided, sustained, gifted and inspired by the Holy Spirit. We believe we are beloved children of the Creator of the universe and that we are called to live our lives growing in love of God and love of our neighbors. We believe that church is one place where that growth happens: where we can worship, learn, serve and be transformed.
We value loving relationship. Loving relationship is the heart of our faith, because loving relationship is the heart of God. We manifest the love of God through care for one another, whether members of our congregation or our wider community. Through our congregational care, ministries, small groups, local, national and international mission work, children and youth ministries, fellowship and fun and more, loving relationships change lives.
We value welcome to all. We believe that we are called to emulate God’s welcome to all, no matter who we are, no matter where we are on life’s journey. We welcome all because we believe that God has given us diverse gifts to meet diverse needs and that we find our unity through our common journey of faith.

Our 2020 Strategic Goal
Our plan for our next four years is to grow. We believe that is our one, over-arching goal for the next four years at FCC: to grow, intentionally and authentically, into a vital and vibrant multi-celled congregational church.
Our plan to grow will require intentional reflection and disciplined response in many areas. We believe we have been called to grow, not just in numbers, but to grow more connected, more faithful, more engaged and more creative. In order to grow, we will need to broaden our outreach to new members and better engage and retain our current members. Therefore, we will work together as leadership, staff and all members to meet our goal to grow, particularly through the following strategies:
Our Intentional Growth Strategy
Governance: Our staff and council will engage in a sustained effort to adopt and embody a system of governance and ministry appropriate to a multi-celled congregational church. This will increase clarity, communication and accountability, enhancing our ability to support growing ministries and loving relationships by encouraging creativity, agility, innovation and responsiveness.
Worship: We will evaluate all aspects of our current worship services to allow for increased participation and attendance from our existing members, new members, visitors and guests. In particular, we have noted that the way we have scheduled our music and educational programs has created substantial barriers to growth and we will work to collaboratively address those challenges. We continue to believe that congregational worship is the central moment in the life of our faith community, even as we recognize that weekly worship attendance is neither the social expectation nor the measure of engagement it once was. We will work to provide welcoming, excellent, substantive and inspiring worship opportunities.
Pastoral Care: We will work to create a rich and attentive network of pastoral care, enhancing and expanding the care already offered by exploring ways to equip and empower additional lay ministry, perhaps including an intentional lay caring ministry such as Stephen Ministry. Pastors will always be pastors; they will continue to be present in times of need, particularly times of crisis. At the same time, we will augment and diversify our approach to pastoral care in a manner appropriate for a multi-celled congregation.
Small Groups: We will enthusiastically and creatively pursue the formation and facilitation of additional small groups for fellowship, spiritual growth, mutual care and service. Whether they are formed around an activity, an experience, a stage in life, a common goal or any other form, small groups must increasingly become the point of connection within our congregation and a primary way of deepening our connection with God and one another.
We will continue to invest in the resources necessary to facilitate sustainable growth. This plan will ask all of us to commit in many ways: time, talent, money, prayer. In particular, we will need to continue to build a multi-disciplined pastoral and staff team to support the spiritual and administrative dimensions of a 21st century faith organization and meet the increasingly wide-ranging and complex needs of a growing congregation.
 A multi-celled (also called a “program”) church is defined as a church whose average weekly worship attendance is between 250 and 400 members. In short, these churches are known for the quality and variety of the programs, opportunities and points of connection and transformation that they offer a diverse community.
